360° Mountain Viewpoint ATV Ride — Hang Dong (3–4 Hours)

The experience

Where the river trail is about water and mud, this route is about height and views. It climbs out of the valley on a mix of surfaces — the operator describes it as roughly eighty per cent sealed road and twenty per cent dirt — with rough gravel sections and some genuinely steep pitches, and it finishes at a mountain viewpoint that opens up in all directions.

That combination makes it the easier of the two long routes to ride and the better one to photograph. You spend less time fighting through fords and more time watching the country change as you gain altitude: farmland, then forest, then the long ridgelines of the hills south of Chiang Mai stacked up behind each other. On a clear morning the view from the top is the sort of thing that justifies the entire trip.

The riding is on 225 cc automatic ATVs, so there is nothing to learn beyond throttle and brake, and staff ride with the group throughout. Helmet, goggles and a rain jacket are supplied and personal injury insurance is issued before you set off. The steep gravel climbs are where the guide's line matters most, and they will show you how to take them.

Return transport from central Chiang Mai is included with a morning or an afternoon departure, and one rider is enough for the route to run. Each machine carries a driver and one passenger up to a combined 130 kg, priced separately.

A long stop at the top. Views open in every direction over the ridgelines and valleys, and this is where everyone takes their photographs.

Frequently asked questions

Take this one if you want views, a mix of road and dirt and a slightly cleaner day. Take the river trail if you want water crossings, mud and the messier kind of fun. They cost exactly the same and run to the same length. If you cannot decide, the full-day combination does both.

No licence is required to ride on the private off-road trails, and no previous experience is needed — the machines are fully automatic, so there is no clutch and no gear changing. You will be shown the controls before you set off. Do bring your passport or ID card, as riders are registered before the trip.

Yes, and it is a combined limit: the driver and passenger together must not exceed 130 kg on any one ATV. If the two of you are over that, take two machines with one rider each.

Yes. Return transport from central Chiang Mai is included, with a morning collection at around 08:30 and an afternoon collection at around 12:30. The site is in Hang Dong, roughly 30 to 45 minutes south of the city.

Moderate. Most of the distance is on sealed mountain road, but the dirt sections include loose gravel and steep climbs that demand attention. The machines are automatic and the guides ride with you and set the pace, so beginners manage it — but it is not a flat park circuit.

No — this is a mountain, and cloud and haze happen. Mornings from November to February are the most reliable; March to May can be hazy from agricultural burning, and the rainy season is very clear one hour and inside a cloud the next.
