Back, Head & Shoulder Massage – 60 Minutes

The experience

One hour, one region, no wasted time. This treatment ignores your legs entirely and spends the full sixty minutes on the part of the body that actually hurts after a long-haul flight, a week of laptop work in a café or three days on the back of a scooter: the upper back, shoulders, neck and scalp.

That focus is what makes it effective. A full-body hour has to move on; here the therapist can work the same knotted trapezius for as long as it takes, then move up through the neck and finish with a scalp massage that unwinds the muscles most people do not realise they are clenching. It is the treatment we recommend to guests who say they only ever get tension in one place.

You stay comfortably clothed or draped in a private room on a warm massage bed, at a small garden spa in the heart of the old town a few minutes from Chiang Mai Gate — a cozy property of old wood and greenery rather than a hotel spa floor. The spa's own natural Thai herbal products are used, and an upgraded version of this treatment using the house scented herbal balm is available if you want the heat and aroma of the balm worked in.

Free hotel pick-up around the old town area is included, along with herbal welcome tea and shower facilities. At 550 THB it is an easy add-on to a day of sightseeing, and short enough to fit before dinner.

Frequently asked questions

Not if that is where the problem is. Most guests who book this say a full-body hour never spends long enough on their shoulders. If you would rather cover more of the body, the 60-minute traditional Thai massage or the 120-minute three-treatment combo are better choices.

The same treatment with the spa's own scented relaxing herbal balm worked in, priced at 590 THB for 60 minutes on the brochure's treatment-description panel. Ask for it at booking if you want the aroma and warmth of the balm.

Only partially — enough for the therapist to work the back and shoulders, with draping over everything else. Many guests keep loose spa trousers on throughout.

Yes — free pick-up around the old town area is advertised on the brochure. Give us your hotel name when you book and we will confirm the arrangement and the collection time. If you are staying outside the old town, tell us and we will check.

Yes, we recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead, and more in high season (November to February) when the good spas in Chiang Mai fill up in the evenings.

Yes — private rooms are available, including couples' rooms. Say so when you book so the right room is held for you.

Bring almost nothing. Loose spa clothing, towels and everything else needed is provided, and there are showers on site. Comfortable clothes to change back into afterwards are the only real recommendation.

Never expected, but it is customary in Thai spa culture and always appreciated. Fifty to a hundred baht for a therapist you were happy with is normal.
