Deep Tissue Massage with Herbal Balm – 60 Minutes

The experience

This is the treatment for people who ask for firm pressure and mean it. A deep tissue massage works the inner layers of muscle and connective tissue rather than the surface, and it is the honest answer to the specific tension that comes from laptops, long-haul flights and days hunched over a scooter throttle.

The spa's own scented herbal balm is worked in as the therapist goes. Applied warm to muscle that is already being worked deeply, the balm carries local Thai herbs into the tissue, and the relief it gives on a stubborn shoulder or a locked lower back is why the treatment is on the menu at all. The spa produces its own product line using active ingredients extracted from local herbs, guaranteed to Thai quality standards.

Sixty minutes is enough to properly address one or two problem areas — neck and shoulders, lower back, hips, calves — rather than skim the whole body. Tell your therapist at the start exactly where the trouble is and how hard you want it worked; deep tissue should feel like productive pressure, never like injury, and you should speak up immediately if it crosses that line.

You are treated in a private room on a warm massage bed at a small garden spa in the heart of the old town, minutes from Chiang Mai Gate. Free hotel pick-up around the old town is included, along with herbal welcome tea, towels and showers. Expect to feel slightly worked-over the next day, in the way that means it did something.

Frequently asked questions

It is firm and you will feel it, but it should stay on the right side of the line between productive pressure and pain. Tell your therapist immediately if it crosses over — good deep tissue work is a conversation, not an endurance test.

Mild soreness the next day is normal, much like after a hard workout. Drink plenty of water and it passes within a day or two.

Deep tissue if the problem is specific and muscular — a knot, a locked shoulder, a tight lower back. Traditional Thai massage if you are generally stiff all over and want stretching as well as pressure. If it is deep muscle ache after a trek, the 90-minute Thai massage with hot herbal compress is the better bet.

Yes — free pick-up around the old town area is advertised on the brochure. Give us your hotel name when you book and we will confirm the arrangement and the collection time. If you are staying outside the old town, tell us and we will check.

Yes, we recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead, and more in high season (November to February) when the good spas in Chiang Mai fill up in the evenings.

Yes — private rooms are available, including couples' rooms. Say so when you book so the right room is held for you.

Bring almost nothing. Loose spa clothing, towels and everything else needed is provided, and there are showers on site. Comfortable clothes to change back into afterwards are the only real recommendation.

Never expected, but it is customary in Thai spa culture and always appreciated. Fifty to a hundred baht for a therapist you were happy with is normal.
