The experience

Thirty minutes is not long, but it is enough to get properly off-road. This is the short session at the Mae Rim site: forest tracks, rough ground and a decent amount of noise, with a stop at the Long Neck Karen village folded into it so that you come away with more than an adrenaline spike.

The trails here run through lush forest north of Chiang Mai and are genuinely uneven — this is off-road riding rather than a farm-track pootle. The ATVs are automatic, so there is nothing technical to learn, and staff lead the ride and pick the line through the rougher sections.

It suits two kinds of visitor: people who want to know whether they enjoy quad biking before committing to a longer ride, and people who are already spending a day in Mae Rim among the elephant camps, waterfalls and gardens and want half an hour of something faster. The operator bills the session as thirty minutes and describes roughly twenty minutes of that as riding time, the rest being briefing, gear and the village stop.

The base is open daily from eight until eight and sits twenty to thirty minutes north of the city. Transport is not included, but a private return transfer can be arranged for 1,000 THB.

Frequently asked questions

The operator sells it as a 30-minute session and describes about twenty minutes of actual riding, with the rest going on briefing, gear and the village stop. We would rather quote you the honest version than the headline.

Each ATV takes one driver and one passenger, and the two are priced separately — the driver pays for the machine, the passenger pays a smaller fee to ride behind. If both of you want to drive, book two driver places.

No. The ATVs are automatic and staff brief you on the controls and lead the ride, so first-timers are the norm here. No driving licence is required for the private trails.

Not on the ride products. The site is in Mae Rim, about 20 to 30 minutes north of Chiang Mai, and the operator offers a private return transfer to your accommodation for 1,000 THB per booking. Otherwise make your own way there — plenty of people combine it with a day out in Mae Rim.

If you already know you like off-road riding, yes — the one-hour, two-hour and three-hour sessions cover much more ground and much better trails for a modest amount more. Thirty minutes is a taster.

Ask before photographing anyone, buy directly from the households if you want a souvenir, and do not hand money or sweets to children. The communities here host visitors deliberately and your entrance and purchases are what make that work.
