Not everyone wants to spend a whole day and a long drive learning to cook. This class sits in the city centre a few minutes from the ancient Chiang Mai Gate, runs three times a day, costs 800 THB and still teaches you four proper dishes at your own station with your own wok. It is the best-value cooking class in our catalogue and the one we recommend when time or budget is tight.
You choose one dish from each of four categories — a salad, a stir-fry, a soup and a curry — from a genuinely long pick-list: papaya salad, fresh spring rolls, glass noodle salad, pad thai, pineapple fried rice, chicken with cashew nuts, tom yum goong, tom kha gai, clear tofu soup, panang, green curry, massaman or khao soi. Morning and evening sessions begin with a walk through a local fresh market, where the instructor puts names and uses to the herbs, pastes and produce you have been eating all week. The afternoon session skips the market and goes straight to the kitchen.
The kitchen itself is a modern open-plan restaurant kitchen with individual wok stations and proper chef's knives, and the instruction is bilingual: English and Mandarin. That combination — city centre, low price, real technique, two languages — makes it a favourite with families, with groups where not everyone speaks the same language, and with travellers who booked a temple tour in the morning and want to cook in the evening.
Free hotel transfer is included both ways, and every recipe can be made vegetarian. Tea, coffee, water and Thai herbal drinks flow throughout, a recipe cookbook comes home with you, and there is a free plate of mango with sticky rice at the end of every half-day class.

Yes. The menu is a pick-list: you choose one dish from each category, so everyone at the table cooks something different. You also choose how spicy each dish is.

Yes. A non-cooking visitor pays 500 THB, which covers joining the class and eating the food, but not a cooking station.
Yes — this is one of the few schools in Chiang Mai with instructors who teach fluently in both English and Mandarin Chinese, which makes it a good choice for mixed-language groups.
