The experience

An hour is where this site starts to make proper sense. The route runs out through Mae Ram village, where you get a look at ordinary working life in the valley, stops at the Thai buffalo museum — genuinely interesting, and a reminder that until very recently the buffalo was the engine of northern Thai agriculture — and then drops into the forest for the off-road section before arriving at the Long Neck Karen village.

The riding is a mix: village lanes and farm road to begin with, then rougher forest trail where the ATV earns its keep. The machines are automatic, staff lead, and the pace is set for the group rather than the fastest rider, so a first-timer can do this comfortably while still getting the off-road part.

This is the session we would point most people at if they only want to do one ride here. It has enough time in it to include the cultural stops without either of them feeling like a token gesture, and enough trail to be worth the trip out of the city.

The base is in Mae Rim, twenty to thirty minutes north of Chiang Mai, and open every day from eight in the morning until eight in the evening. Transport is not included; a private return transfer can be added for 1,000 THB.

Frequently asked questions

Each ATV takes one driver and one passenger, and the two are priced separately — the driver pays for the machine, the passenger pays a smaller fee to ride behind. If both of you want to drive, book two driver places.

No. The ATVs are automatic and staff brief you on the controls and lead the ride, so first-timers are the norm here. No driving licence is required for the private trails.

Not on the ride products. The site is in Mae Rim, about 20 to 30 minutes north of Chiang Mai, and the operator offers a private return transfer to your accommodation for 1,000 THB per booking. Otherwise make your own way there — plenty of people combine it with a day out in Mae Rim.

The one-hour ride is the sweet spot — long enough to include the buffalo museum, the forest trail and the village without rushing. Thirty minutes is a taster; two and three hours are for people who want the harder trails and the waterfall.

Moderate. The first section is easy going, the forest stretch is rougher with ruts and loose ground. The ATVs are automatic and the staff lead, so beginners cope, but expect to be shaken around.

Ask before photographing anyone, buy directly from the households if you want a souvenir, and do not hand money or sweets to children. The communities here host visitors deliberately and your entrance and purchases are what make that work.
